The second event in our Duel Commander series went down this past Saturday, and oh boy—it was a flavorful mix of chaos, sass, wild plays, and at least one judge too busy ordering food to do her job. Let’s break it all down!
Round 1 Highlights
Dusty went full ramp mode. Trees were tapped. Lands were plentiful. Problems manifested.
Shelly came out swinging (and surviving). Respect.
Chris and Calep both got first blood. The battlefield did not stay peaceful long.
A counterspell... but wait! It went to the top, then exiled. Plot twist!
Red showed up just to deal 4 to everyone and remind us all why we don’t invite red.
Calep took Game 1 against Ricky.
Chris: “We no longer swing. We bop.” Iconic.
Dusty: “You take 1 damage.” Chris (dramatic gasp): “How dare you.”
Dusty’s deck: Issues manifesting constantly.
Chris: “I know I just met you, but I’d never hurt you.” (It was a lie.)
Mirrormaid copying Sphere of Safety. Combat? Don’t know her.
Path to Exile? Nah. Village Rites. “I’ll take care of it myself.”
Judge: Eating. Dancing. Commentating. Definitely not judging.
Dusty & Chris: “We will make the things bigger.” Even if they can’t attack.
Dusty spends 2 mana to deal 4 damage to Chris. Efficiency!
“When he gets mana, you're done.”
1/1 Business Parson entered the chat.
“Since I’m poor and can’t attack… I’ll pass.” — someone embracing the struggle.
“Cards we play from opponents’ zones are donations.”
Ricky took Game 2 vs Calep.
Phasing happened. Some learned. Some wept.
Chris: “I understand it. I respect it. But I don’t like it.”
April: “Chris, don’t forget the apology phase.”
Dusty: “Oh no. 😱”
Chris: “Give the Wishclaw.”
Dusty reminded he can tutor… then deceived.
Calep wins the match.
Chris and Dusty were still in Game 1 with 10 minutes left. Peak pacing.
Moved Dusty’s deck to the center. It was now both of theirs. (Thanks, Beholder.)
“Did you want to swing?” “No, not yet.” (A threat, clearly.)
Graveyard = Sad Zone.
Chris: “Storm count 1.”
Me: 😨
“This is the most interesting game I’ve ever seen.”
Judge: Biased. Rooting for Chris. Still eating.
Dusty (24) and Chris (13) draw.
Round 2 Highlights
Maniacal laughter echoed.
Judge was ordering food for 5 people. Notes? What notes?
Chris wins Game 1 at 20 life. Casual.
Chris: “I’ll keep.” (Delivers it with the stank face.)
Ensnaring Bridge: “No attacky-tacky.”
Chris: “Have a bird instead.”
“That goes away… hopefully forever.”
April: “That one hurts.” (She could no longer activate abilities.)
Chris: “He is died.”
April: “Look, it’s a body.” (Hurt feelings follow.)
Hullbreaker Horror = Devastation.
Dusty finally wins the game he could’ve 10 mins earlier. Accidentally nuked his own creatures first.
April: “Target your Gonti.” Chris: “No, your bird.” April: “No, your Gonti.”
Chris: “Gonti is back and better than ever… because he’s alive.”
Calep wins Game 2 with 20 life.
Final game goes to turns.
Round 3 Highlights
Dusty got the bye and was appalled that he might have to pay again. (He didn’t.)
Judge: Cold. Hungry. Certified Menace.
Artifact destruction on Turn 3. Chris: “I don’t like it.”
Ricky called April a motherf*er** over Flood Your Engines targeting Zur. Immediately followed with, “That’s crazy.”
Chris played a really pretty Dauthi. Table unanimously awed.
Ricky draws, gasps. April doesn’t trust it.
Calep wins Game 1 with Price of Glory.
Ricky wins Game 1.
Dusty almost died to Salantro. (What is that?? We don’t know.)
Judge learns she can penalize people with byes. Absolute power.
Judge: Still dancing.
Calep takes 10 damage like it’s NBD. I was worried.
Ricky: “That’s crazy.” On repeat. Whole game.
Mana Barbs, but for 4.
Rolling Vortex, but for 4.
Calep defeats Chris.
Ricky wins Game 2.
Final Thoughts
Ramps were ramped, friendships were mildly threatened, the judge was grooving instead of ruling, and somehow everyone still had a great time.
Big congrats to Calep, who took 1st place and went home with $80 in store credit, and to Ricky, who claimed 2nd place and earned $42.50 in store credit!
Next event: Saturday, April 13th at 6:00 PM. Mark your calendars, prep your decks, and please—let’s try to let the judge finish their meal first. 😅
